F4 Prep Class: Ken Kempfer (2 days) - This seminar prepares the technician for the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification Commission (EVTCC) exam F4 and covers basic electricity including electrical theory, battery theory, meters, wires and cables, alternators, cranking motors, and advanced electricity. This training also covers the basic design and performance requirements of fire truck electrical system, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting.
F3 – Fire Pumps and Accessories: Ben Brown (2 days) - The class covers the standards as described in NFPA 1900: Standard for Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Vehicles, Automotive Fire Apparatus, Wildland Fire Apparatus, and Automotive Ambulances (NFPA 1901 Chapters) and NFPA 1910: Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Refurbishment, Testing and Retirement of In- Service Emergency Vehicles and Marine Firefighting Vessels(NFPA 1911 Chapters). Please note that this test draws from the 2024 editions.Ben has hands on pump testing for Waterous pumps.
F1 – Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus: Rob Burley (2 days) - The class covers the maintenance, inspection, and testing of fire apparatus as described in NFPA 1910: NFPA 1911 Chapters
Advanced Critical Thinking: Kevin Roberts (4 days) - Kevin builds a four-layer pyramid of traits/skills:
Character Traits
- Human Nature, including Mind, Will, Emotion Why You Cannot Be a Good Technician Without Being a Good Person
- Honesty - Commitment to Reality and the connection between Honesty and Humility - The difference between words and actions
- Humility - What humility is not. Reputation vs Reality (see awareness below); View of self (real humility is simply accurate); Value of others (humility values others); The role of rules (the submission to rules is a sign of humility, generally)

- The role of discipline vs inspiration.
- Recognizing the importance of (and making the commitment to) PRACTICE.
- Seeing what you are looking at. Whether items on a rig, words in a phrase, or phrases in a sentence. This is hard work if you want to be good at it.
- Awareness, Self-awareness, Awareness of other’s self-awareness, Awareness of transcendence, Recognizing your own and other’s tendencies
- Skills, Traits, and Tendencies as strengths to develop and weaknesses to overcome.
- The Character Traits underlie and inform the following skills.
- Thinking Skills: We discuss the difference between Humans and Computers, Artificial Intelligence, and Diagnostic Feedback Loops.
- Communication Skills: We focus on How to Read Technical Information (we have an exercise of drawing a wiring diagram from the written description) and NFPA standards.
Write Labor Descriptions
Listen to Customers and fellow workers, and
Speak to customers, vendors, and fellow workers. - Technical Skills: We then cover Basic Technical Principles:
- Mechanical Physics
- Basic Electricity
- Introduction to Fuel Chemistry
- Thermal, Combustion, and Volumetric Efficiency
- Air Pressure and Air Flow.
Wednesday & Thursday Aug 21-22
Fire Foam Systems: Ben Brown (Wed Only) - Ben will cover maintenance and common issues that come up with foam systems. Ben has real time experience with these systems as a fire fighter and owner of a fire apparatus sales and repair facility.
HVAC Systems: Ben Brown (Thur Only) - Ben will cover maintenance and repair of Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning systems.
F2 Design & Performance Fire App: Rob Burley (2 days) - Class to cover the testing over the standards for fire apparatus as described in NFPA 1901.
F5 Aerial Maintenance Prep Class: Ken Kempfer (2 days) Pierce Trainer - This workshop will prepare the technician to take the EVTCC F5 exam. Course objectives are to define the terms and phrases commonly used with aerial fire apparatus, operations and/or testing; identify the design requirements for aerial fire apparatus stated in NFPA 1901; understand the testing, inspection and documentation requirements of all aerial fire apparatus (NFPA 1914)
* understand and identify hydraulic systems of an aerial apparatus;
* describe activities considered to be accepted practice in service and repair of aerial apparatus, and understand the principles of operating aerial apparatus.

Please note: a prep class is just one part of the learning procedure that an attendee needs to pass an exam. Technicians are urged to obtain and study the reference material prior to attending the workshop. There is a study guide for each EVT certification exam that outlines what the exam covers. Plus there are a list of resources that contain the study information in them. For reference material ordering information, visit evtcc.org
Each applicant is responsible to go to the evtcc.org website to register for their exam at Overland Park on August 23,2024.
